Explore Scientific MN-152/740 6 "Optical Tube - A 152 / 760mm Maksutov Newton in carbon fiber tube
Highly corrected optics for far field observation and astrophotography. Developed in collaboration with the famous "comet hunter" David H. Levy. The Maksutov-Newton system has design-wise compared to the classic Newton pros and cons. In addition to the higher price, the disadvantage is the greater weight compared to the classic Newton - the thick meniscus lens at the front opening beats here.
The main advantage of Maksutov-Newton over the classical Newton is its edge sharpness. Newtonian telescopes are really sharp only in the absolute center of the picture - outside the center of the picture these telescopes show a dominant aberration, the so-called coma. This is system-related - so has nothing to do with manufacturing tolerances and applies accordingly for all brands. The coma "warps" the star point - he gets a tail, like a small comet. This results in the loss of image sharpness and contrast. The Maksutov-Newton has this error to a much lesser extent - so it falls below the visibility limit for most purposes. The result is a much sharper image - for visual observation as well as for photography with digital SLR cameras. The Maksutov-Newton is therefore an almost ideal all-round telescope, which images sharply without additional correctors across the field.
