Sky-Watcher 10" Dobson SynScan – computer-controlled locating of astronomical objects
The Skyliner 254mm (10") f/4.7 Dobsonian combines the advantages of a Dobsonian telescope with a GoTo function
254mm (10") f/1200 collapsible, computer-controlled GoTo parabolic Dobsonian with WiFi (featuring low-expansion borosilicate glass)
Skywatcher Skyliner 250PX GoTo Dobson
The ultimate 10" Dobsonian! A computer-controlled GoTo Dobsonian with built-in WiFi. It features superb 254mm (10") parabolic optics from Sky-Watcher, crafted from low-expansion borosilicate glass—ensuring faster cool-down times and excellent thermodynamic optical properties. It also boasts a convenient, collapsible "FlexTube" truss-tube design.
Included equipment: A precision 2" Crayford focuser (with 1.25" and 2" adapters), a 9x50 straight-through finderscope, 12.5mm and 20mm 70° super-wide-angle eyepieces, a 1.25" adapter with a brass compression ring (to prevent damage to your eyepieces), and a universal smartphone camera adapter for capturing your first images of celestial objects.
The Skyliner 250P FlexTube SynScan Dobsonian is mounted on a fully motorized, computer-controlled base. Following a simple alignment procedure, the system can automatically slew to over 42,900 night-sky objects via the included hand controller. Furthermore, the GoTo system can be operated wirelessly via WiFi using the SynScan app on a smartphone or tablet. The base incorporates patented "Freedom-Find" dual encoders, which allow the mount to be moved manually without losing its positional data. This enables you to quickly slew the telescope by hand to an object on the opposite side of the sky, then let the computer handle the precise final alignment. The telescope tube can be easily and quickly detached from the base, making it much more convenient to transport.
For visual astronomy, a large, light-gathering Dobsonian is truly hard to beat. The only drawback is that as they get larger, they become increasingly cumbersome to transport and store. Traditional truss-tube designs require... No time-consuming setup procedures. Sky-Watcher’s clever, patented, collapsible FlexTube™ truss-tube design is a true game-changer, as it requires no assembly. The optical tube can simply be extended, locking into place on three sturdy struts in a matter of seconds. There is no lateral movement or flexure when extended, meaning that re-collimation is not necessary. A second locking position is provided for use with a binoviewer. When collapsed, the tube is easy to transport and can be stored upright. The optical tube can also be easily detached from the rocker box by removing the side handles, making transport even more convenient.
The Sky-Watcher Skyliner 250P FlexTube SynScan Dobsonian, with its impressive parabolic optics, is an excellent all-rounder, offering truly stunning views of the Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects such as galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. The heart of any Dobsonian telescope is the quality of its mirror optics. The precision of the figuring, the material used, and the coatings all play a significant role in the telescope's performance. Sky-Watcher is well-renowned for its expertise in manufacturing high-quality telescope mirrors—a reputation built over decades. Parabolic mirrors have a complex surface geometry and must therefore be crafted with great care. A perfectly shaped parabolic primary mirror eliminates spherical aberration, ensuring that all light rays converge at a single focal point. Sky-Watcher’s diffraction-limited parabolic primary mirrors produce sharp, high-contrast images rich in detail.
The primary and secondary mirrors of the Skyliner 250P FlexTube SynScan Dobsonian are crafted from a special low-expansion borosilicate glass—similar to the well-known Pyrex—which features an extremely low... ...has [a lower] coefficient of thermal expansion compared to standard glass types like BK7 or window glass. In practice, this means shorter cooling times to reach thermal stability—without the need for a cooling fan. Furthermore, the mirror maintains its shape better during the cooling process, preventing image distortion and allowing observations to begin sooner.
Both the primary and secondary mirrors feature Sky-Watcher’s high-quality RAQ™ (Radiant Aluminium Quartz) coating. This multi-layer finish consists of aluminum, dielectric tantalum pentoxide (for enhanced reflectivity and protection), and a top layer of silicon dioxide. It is a brilliant, durable combination that offers 94% reflectivity and is built to last for many years.
The secondary mirror is held in place by four specially designed, highly stable vanes that are only 0.5 mm thick. These minimize obstruction in the optical path and reduce diffraction spikes around stars to an absolute minimum.
Skyliner Classic Dobsons come with a beautiful "Black Diamond" metallic finish, complemented by contrasting white surfaces—a design choice that serves more than just an aesthetic purpose. The white finish makes the telescope easier to see at night, helping to prevent anyone from accidentally bumping into it.
