Coronado Filter SolarMax III H-Alpha-Etalon 90mm BF30

This set consists of an H-alpha etalon with a half-width of less than 0.7 Ångström and a blocking filter integrated into a diagonal prism.

With this combination, you can convert your refractor (refracting telescope) into a telescope that allows safe observation of the Sun in H-alpha light. In the H-alpha line with a wavelength of 656 nanometers, you can see the Sun's chromosphere, the atmospheric layer above the solar photosphere. Observe prominences, filaments, and other time-varying phenomena. There's always something happening on the Sun in H-alpha light!

Please note: Safe use is only possible with the combination of etalon and blocking filter. No single part is sufficient as a filter on its own!

Two pieces of information are essential when selecting these solar filters: The first number in the product name indicates the diameter of the etalon, the second the diameter of the blocking filter.

Blocking Filter BF: The deflection optics with the eyepiece mount houses the blocking filter. This filter reduces the brightness of the solar image and is therefore a very important component of the overall solar telescope system, which must not be removed! For purely visual observation, a small blocking filter is sufficient; for photography, a larger one should be chosen.

The size of the blocking filter should be selected so that the entire solar disk can be seen. The longer the focal length of the telescope, the larger the solar image, and therefore a larger blocking filter is required. The recommended focal length for this set can be found in the technical specifications.

RichView™ & T-Max Tuning: The H-Alpha filter is a so-called etalon. In the etalon, most of the radiation in the visible spectral range is eliminated through destructive interference of the incoming light. Only the desired wavelength around 656 nanometers passes through.

To achieve this, the width of the etalon must be precisely adjusted and readjusted during observation. Point the telescope at the sun and use the focuser to bring the limb of the sun into focus. Turn the large dial of the RichView™ system until the structures on the sun are visible with maximum contrast. You can then slightly adjust the tilt of the etalon using the small Max Tuning wheel to achieve maximum image brightness.
