The Bahtinov mask (also called the Bakhtinov mask, after its inventor Pavel Ivanovich Bakhtinov) is one of the most useful tools for astrophotography. It makes focusing very easy.
How does the Bahtinov mask work?
The image produced by the Bahtinov mask is independent of atmospheric conditions. Often, the Airy disk cannot be seen clearly enough to achieve optimal focusing.
The spikes produced by the Bahtinov mask are easier for the human eye to interpret than the smallest diameter of a diffraction disk. This allows the brain to better process this information and enable a more objective assessment of collimation.
The central beam is positioned midway between the other two beams when the ideal focus position is reached.
Notes:
The Bahtinov masks are individually calculated for each telescope for optimal performance.
The Bahtinov masks were calculated, designed, and printed by us. We print the masks in black or white, depending on availability. They are intentionally designed to fit a little looser to avoid damaging the delicate surfaces in the dew cap.
