Beginners, novices, professionals - The right telescope for you
What's the right telescope for me?
ED apochromat or refractor, or perhaps a Newtonian or reflector?
Many parameters play a role in telescope observing for an enjoyable and successful experience. And often, it's not the size of the telescope that ensures success and enjoyment, but rather the right telescope for your preferred application: planets or the moon, or perhaps galaxies and star clusters.
Just as you wouldn't buy a tractor simply because you like high horsepower, a 14" Newtonian telescope might not be very satisfying if you "only" want to observe the moon on your balcony or while traveling.
We ourselves enjoy fantastic astronomical observations through smaller reflecting telescopes, starting at 8 inches, which are, for example, quite affordable, and we know many amateur astronomers who are very happy with their ¤300 Dobsonian telescopes.
This isn't a mirror-versus-lens comparison, but rather our own personal experience spanning decades!
Before you buy a telescope, you should consider:
What would you like to observe (planets or deep-sky objects)? Visual observation or photography?
How much are you willing to spend?
Here's how to choose the right telescope:
