NGC 7023 - Iris Nebula
......................................................
After a long astro-hiatus, I've been processing some of my collected data again. Today I present to you a nebula that's close to my heart, thanks to the distinctive color of the gases reflected by the star at its center.
The Iris Nebula (also NGC 7023 and Caldwell 4) is a luminous reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. The name NGC 7023 refers to the open cluster in the Greater Reflection Nebula, LBN 487.
The nebula, which shines at magnitude +6.8, is illuminated by a star with magnitude +7.4 called HD 200775. It is located next to the type variable star Mira T Cephei and the bright variable star with magnitude +3.23 Beta Cephei (Alfirk). It is 1,300 light-years away and has a diameter of six light-years.
