Repair and Adjustment of the SkyWatcher Star Discovery AZ GoTo Mount:

The friction of the Star Discovery can be individually adjusted, allowing you to use a 6" f/5 Newtonian or C8 with this mount without the axis spinning or running idle. The load capacity of the AZ mount is approximately 5 kg. The friction is occasionally set too lightly when shipped.

To do this, the contact pressure on the axis is increased via two discs in the mount. The pressure should not be set too high to avoid placing too much strain on the motors. We test this with a laboratory power supply and observe the current consumption. If it is too high, the contact pressure is reduced.

In one of the pictures, you can see the sturdy roller bearings.

A stargazer had left the mount on the balcony, so it stood in the rain for a few days. The metal parts on the base of the mount had rusted. We removed this by disassembling the discs, spraying them with rust remover, and re-greasing them. can be made operational again.
