Montes Alpes
This mountain range forms the northeastern boundary of Mare Imbrium. This lunar sea, which contains almost no prominent formations, forms the western side of the Montes Alpes. In contrast, the eastern side features a more structured highland with a significantly lighter albedo. The mountain range begins approximately one crater diameter northwest of Cassini Crater at the Agassiz Promontorium, then extends 50 km northwest, and finally continues—interrupted in places—to Plato Crater. The Rima Plato trough system is also located in this section.
