Products description

ZWO Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector ADC

ZW Optical's ADC corrects the color shift caused by atmospheric dispersion, increasing the sharpness of the moon and planets
♦ When the moon and planets are close to the horizon, the effect is similar to the prism. The objects are warped, they get a color shift. With the ADC corrector you can correct that, the sharpness increases.

♦ There is a T2 connector (M42x0,75) on both sides of the ADC

♦ In addition, on the telescope side and eyepiece side still 1.25 "adapter included.

♦ Suitable for photography and observation

♦ Correction is done simply by twisting one of the two prisms (left) during observation or photography

♦ You can see the result directly in the eyepiece or on the photo

What is an atmospheric dispersion corrector?

This ADC corrector is a small unit that corrects the refraction of light in the atmosphere. Simply explained, you can often see colored edges on bright objects such as planets when being observed with the telescope. For example, a large object like Jupiter has a red and blue color fringe and is also distorted. This effect arises from the refraction of light in the atmosphere. The atmosphere here looks like a prism. This effect is more or less strong, depending on how high the object is above the horizon. The deeper the object is, the stronger the effect becomes. Since the planets are only very deep, especially in northern countries, the effect is particularly strong here, and the proofreader is especially worthwhile here.

The ADC corrects this effect and allows you to observe the objects free from color aberrations and distortions. You do not have to wait much longer for the object to be observed to be high enough in the sky to allow an acceptable observation. Now you can watch in brilliant quality at any time.

How does the ZWO ADC corrector work?

Our atmosphere breaks the light differently, depending on the wavelength. Red light is broken differently than blue light. The closer the object is to the horizon, the stronger the effect.

Adjust the two prisms in the corrector using the adjusting levers on the ADC, thus counteracting the effect of the earth's atmosphere, neutralizing this color shift.

Application in photography

If you take color photos of planets without the ADC, you will have color changes and distortions. Although this effect can be largely eliminated in image processing, it results in a loss of resolution that can not be restored. Although it helps to record the individual colors using filters, the ADC also maximizes the result here. The improvement is easily visible.

By using the ADC, you get a much better resolution image by avoiding distortion and image shifting. Compare the photos of the planet Mars. On the left you can see a color image without a corrector, on the right the RGB channels are aligned. In the middle you can see a shot with the ADC.

Important Winweis for use:

For the right effect, the corrector must be oriented correctly to the horizon. This is usually the case when the overlapping handles of the compensator are parallel to the horizon line in the focuser.

By twisting the handles by the same amount, but in opposite directions, one can now turn the prisms so that their effects no longer cancel each other out. If the picture gets worse, it must be adjusted in the other direction.

It should be noted that in the case of parallactically mounted telescopes, the position changes to the horizon over time, which of course must be taken into account.
