Power your telescope anywhere with the PowerTank Lithium LT, our smallest and lightest lithium-ion battery pack. This handy device is a must-have for your telescope and accessories, camping gear, emergency kit, and more.
Stable Power for Telescopes
The PowerTank Lithium LT uses lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide [LiNiMnCoO2] technology, also known as NMC technology, which delivers consistent power over long periods and requires less maintenance than a conventional sealed lead-acid battery.
Unlike other lithium-ion power supplies in this price range, the PowerTank Lithium LT was developed by astronomers for astronomers—specifically for the unique needs of computerized telescopes.
Modern telescope electronics are very sensitive to incorrect voltage. Operating a telescope at too low a voltage can cause the motors to suffer under higher loads and even cause the electronics to fail. The PowerTank Lithium LT uses a built-in voltage regulator to ensure it delivers at least 11.8 volts at all times, until the battery is almost depleted and shuts down.
There are batteries from other suppliers that claim to contain enough watt-hours of electricity to power your telescope for hours. However, the technology in these batteries was originally developed to power much lower-voltage electronics, such as CPAP masks for home use. Although the actual voltage delivered starts at 12 V, it decreases rapidly, impairing your telescope's performance and becoming useless within about 2-3 hours.
Celestron telescope engineers worked closely with battery suppliers on the PowerTank Lithium LT to ensure this performance degradation doesn't occur. The built-in voltage regulator ensures a stable 12V output, regardless of the amount of charge remaining in the battery. This keeps your telescope's electronics safe and performing at peak performance, so you can focus on astronomy.
The NMC technology used by the PowerTank Lithium LT offers far more advantages than the commonly used lithium cobalt oxide batteries available on the market today. Our NMC battery not only has a longer shelf life and three times the charge cycles of LiCoO2 storage cells, but also offers overcharge and overdischarge protection and can withstand temperatures 60°C higher than LiCoO2 batteries, reducing the likelihood of NMC cells thermally overheating.
Compared to a traditional lead-acid battery, the PowerTank Lithium LT is smaller, lighter, more efficient, and better for the environment. It offers better performance, a longer lifespan, and safer operation than other, cheaper lithium-ion batteries. It also features automatic shutdown, reverse polarity protection, charge/discharge protection, and overvoltage and short-circuit protection.
Use in the field
Thanks to its extremely portable housing, you can take the battery pack anywhere, from remote dark-sky locations for astrophotography to a weekend camping trip. You can attach it to your telescope's tripod leg using the included 2" straps, where it won't get in the way. No additional cables are required other than the power cable for charging your telescope.
The PowerTank Lithium LT has connections for a wide variety of devices. There are two output ports: a 12V DC port for the telescope and a 2.1A fast-charging USB port for smartphones and tablets. This USB port also works with accessories that require 5V via USB.
Traveling with the PowerTank
The PowerTank Lithium LT can also accompany you on your next vacation. With 73.3 Wh, it meets current FAA regulations (160 Wh) for carry-on luggage. Please check with your airline in advance to see if they have stricter guidelines.

Guide to Powering Your Telescope: Celestron PowerTank and PowerTank Lithium Series. Owners of computerized telescopes today have a variety of options for powering their telescopes, even in remote observing locations. Lance Lucero is our Astronomy Product Manager and responsible for the development of our PowerTank Lithium and PowerTank Lithium Pro batteries. In this interview, he provides an overview of the various options. What options do I have for powering a Celestron telescope? Of course, you can power your telescope with a 12V power supply. Some telescopes come with one included, while others allow you to connect a separate power supply. This is the most convenient and inexpensive power supply for permanently installed telescopes or if an electrical outlet is available at your observing location. However, when setting up your telescope, be careful not to accidentally trip over the cable in the dark. [Note: Many inexpensive power supplies don't provide enough voltage in cold temperatures. We therefore recommend the Baader Outdoor Telescope power supplies, which are also designed for use in low temperatures.] Many of our telescopes run on standard batteries, either in a separate battery pouch or in a built-in battery compartment. This works, but if you observe regularly, you'll also need to buy new batteries regularly. Unfortunately, rechargeable AA batteries...
