How we adjust: About us

APM-EMS Bino 140
2x APM Doublet SD Apo 140 f / 7 FPL53 special optical tubes for Bino application

Every single APM 140 f / 7 tube convinces with its high performance. Both SD tubes have a double optic with SD glass, one lens of which is made of FPL-53. This new innovative combination leads to a color correction that is far above the usual in this price category. Before assembly and shipping, each lens goes through an interferometric test at 532nm (green). APM thus guarantees an extremely high quality for this bino telescope and a congruent quality for both optics.
The instrument is supplied with two massive 3.7 inch pullouts from APM telescopes.

With the two 140mm APO refractors, we currently offer maximum optical performance in this combination, with a tolerable weight and perfect mechanical processing!

At a glance:
Two 140 mm SD-Apo lenses (doublets, FPL53, air gap) from APM, with test report (interferometric test of each lens at 532 nm (green) in Germany)
Strehl:> = 0.94
Focal length: 980 mm (f / 7)
140 mm free opening
3.7-inch focusers from APM (which are in no way inferior to the feather-touch focusers from Starlight Instruments)
Eye reunification: Matsumoto EMS UXL for 2 inch eyepieces (each with 2 highly reflecting mirrors). These offer an upright, true-to-side image (like binoculars) and effective double image compensation.
Minimum adjustable eye relief: 59 mm
As standard, a 2 inch clear glass filter is screwed in between the eyepiece holder and the EMS unit. For an additional charge of 70 euros, these filters can be exchanged for those of the Astronomik brand (we can highly recommend these measures). With 97% -99% transmission in the visual, they fit well into the overall concept.
Tubes made of 2.5mm thick aluminum
Tubes / optical axes perfectly aligned in parallel
To a very high degree mechanically stable and robust
Adjustment of the two axes is possible (if the bino should be misaligned)
The pivot point of the Bino can be quickly and easily adjusted in several stages (important if the eyepieces differ in weight)
Adjustable barrel weights between the two tubes for balancing in operation (approx. 700 grams)
Incl. high quality fork (multiplex mahogany, oiled / waterproof) with friction screws
Butter-smooth and smooth running of the binos in all directions
Suitable for 2 inch and 1 1/4 inch eyepieces
Sliding dew caps (length: approx. 27 cm)
Tube closure caps made of aluminum
With a total weight of approx. 20.5 kg (without fork / mount) it is comparatively light for a Bino of this size class
With a narrow transport length of 90 cm, a width of 42 cm and a height of 21 cm, it is very compact and therefore still portable
Fork mount weight: 5.5 kg

The advantages over a telescope with Bino as a beam splitter or large field binocular
With the beam splitting in the standard bino approach, performance is lost purely technically. Not only does the image become darker, but also sharpness and contrast are reduced. Not so if you use two parallel telescopes as bino. Although the image does not become brighter than with a telescope and with one eye, the perception of contrast and the achievable visual resolution increases noticeably. This is particularly evident in DeepSky objects such as galaxies and nebulae, which can now be observed much more plastically (almost three-dimensionally) and with a clear plus in details. Magnifications up to 200 times work without any problems.

The biggest advantage of this double refractor compared to a binocular is surely that no double images are generated. Everyone "squints" more or less with their eyes and this makes it difficult to watch with a Bino. Under unfavorable conditions (our brain) repeatedly creates double images. What is less critical during the day can be seen even more with point objects (possibly also with the moon or planets) at night. Matsumoto's precise and ingenious eye reconciliation enables observation without double images.

The special thing about the 140mm Bino SD APO:
Very high quality and of convincingly good optical quality
2x pure optics with FLP53 glass
2x precise APM 3.7 "extract 1:10 reduction
With f / 7 ideal for visual observations
CNC pipe clamps
handles
ergonomic prisms from Matsumoto (for image erection)
suitable for 2 "and 1.25" eyepieces

When building a large binocular from two telescope tubes, there are some important problems that all have to be solved. This includes the following points:
Absolute parallelism of the two optical axes
Easy comparison of the two images, individually adjustable for both eyes
Adjustable eye relief of the two optical axes
Delicate focusing, because with such a Bino you can easily use the entire magnification range
Terrestrial image erection
High sharpness and lossless contrast transmission

The high-quality double refractor system is being built in cooperation with Matthias Wirth. Together we have created a perfect symbiosis of optical quality and mechanical value.

Watching is really fun! Both instruments are screwed tight and attached to a stable mount. A real treat for all visual observers !!!

Scope of delivery:
