Heavily contaminated SC telescope & Schmidt plate
Problem:
A Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope was heavily resinous, and the Schmidt plate was also quite dirty.
Since the Schmidt plate is coated (anti-reflective), mechanical cleaning of the Schmidt plate or even using commercially available cleaning agents should be avoided altogether.
Solution and Procedure:
In the first pass, the exterior of the tube was freed of the sticky resin. Tree resin removers designed for car paint work very well; they do not attack paint or plastic. (Always apply to a cloth, not directly onto the tube). The protective cover on the front was also cleaned.
In the second pass, all wood and dust particles were carefully removed from around the Schmidt plate using a soft brush to prevent further soiling.
In the third pass, all coarse particles were removed from the Schmidt plate using a small blower to prevent scratches.
In the 4th pass, the final cleaning of the Schmidt plate was carried out directly with an "optical cleaning spray" and a soft microfiber cloth.
