Repair of a Skywatcher AZGTi (clamp defective)

Product Description

We received two Skywatcher AZ-GTi telescopes whose RA axis clamping no longer works. There is already a report describing this issue.

Since the problem persisted, I disassembled and repaired the AZ-GTi.

1. Remove the DE axis clamping

2. Loosen the housing screws

There are six black Phillips screws on the housing that need to be loosened.

3. The motherboard is now visible.

To make the work easier, you can disconnect the cable connections. Please note the positions of the connectors beforehand so that you can plug them back in correctly later.

4. Removing the mainboard

5. Remove the chrome cover

Remove the two silver Phillips screws.

6. Removing the encoder disk

Remove the four smaller black countersunk Phillips screws and then carefully lift out the disc. Be careful not to damage the optical sensor on the left (8 o'clock position).

7. Loosen the grub screws on the retaining ring.

Use a 1.5 mm Allen key to loosen the two set screws. If you lose them, they are M3 set screws.

8. Loosen the retaining ring

9. Remove the metal washers, encoder mount, and needle bearing

The parts look like this in the correct order:

10. Removing the clamp

Here you can see the problem: a thread in the clamp had been loosened.

11. Replace the thread using a Helicoil insert

Assembly

Reassemble in the reverse order.

Tip: When tightening the retaining ring (step 8), please check whether the axle can still rotate. The retaining ring will quickly become so tight that the axle no longer rotates. It is also important that the two M3 grub screws are tightened evenly, otherwise the axle will jam.

Have fun and success with the repair!

Best regards, Karsten
