Solar Viewer AstroSolar® Silver/Gold
Solar viewing glasses with optical density 5.0

With the Solar Viewer from Baader Planetarium, you are acquiring a high-quality product that is ideal for observing the sun with the naked eye. The most popular use of these solar viewing glasses is during a solar eclipse.

As the moon slowly moves in front of the sun, you can easily observe the sun's gradual disappearance through the Solar Viewer. The spectacular event of a total solar eclipse, which usually lasts only a few minutes, should then be enjoyed without the glasses and safely with the naked eye.

But the Solar Viewer can be used for more than just observing solar eclipses. You can also see larger sunspots through it, or simply discover the sun

Safety instructions and information about AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film

AstroSolar Silver Sonnenfilterfolie OD 5.0

Notes and specifications for Baader AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film OD = 5.0

AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film is specially developed for visual observation of the sun without additional magnification. This film is used exclusively in our solar viewers.

The optical density of solar viewers with AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film is OD 5.0. Our solar viewers are CE-tested and comply with the EN ISO 12312-2:2015 standard – they are therefore certified for safe, direct viewing of the sun.

AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film is not optically treated for use at the highest magnifications, so we do not recommend using it in combination with telescopes or cameras.

We have been manufacturing solar eclipse glasses with AstroSolar® Silver film for over 25 years. During the 1999 solar eclipse, more than 20 million pairs of AstroSolar® Silver film eclipse glasses were in use. For the 2017 solar eclipse in the USA, we are now launching a further development: the AstroSolar® Silver/Gold Solar Viewer, featuring a reflection-free view from the eye side for an excellent viewing experience.

Unlike black, soot-filled absorption films from other manufacturers, the reflective metal layers of our AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film block the red spectral range (especially the invisible infrared component of light) much more effectively, thus achieving a higher safety classification with the required optical density of 5.0.

AstroSolar Safety Folie

Why not use AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film for telescopes?

Our photographically usable AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 for telescopes (shown right) focuses on fine optical quality. This film must be handled very carefully, as the metal layers on both sides are just as sensitive as the exposed telescope mirror of a Newtonian telescope.

AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film for solar-viewing goggles is designed for visual observation without magnification. This film doesn't need to have fine optical quality. Instead, it is technically treated on both sides to ensure a significantly more durable reflective surface, which is more important for solar-viewing goggles due to the sometimes improper handling. Astrosolar® Silver/Gold film is scratch-resistant when handled properly, and in particular, it doesn't produce a blurred double image of the sun, as is often the case with composite materials made of glued-together, single-sided coated films. The double-sided coated AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film, on the other hand, offers a perfectly sharp image, even allowing larger sunspots to be directly viewed.

Never attempt to photograph the sun through solar viewing glasses, either with a camera or by mounting them in front of binoculars, as larger lenses cannot be safely covered by the glasses. The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold Solar Viewers should never be used in combination with optics that point at the sun without a solar filter.

Wichtige Hinweise

Never look at the sun with the naked eye without a solar viewer - Danger!

Only during the few seconds and minutes of a total solar eclipse (when the moon completely covers the sun) can the solar corona be safely observed with the naked eye (see photo below). The entire, hours-long spectacle – as the moon moves in front of and away from the sun – may only be viewed with approved and safe eye protection – the Baader Solar Viewer AstroSolar® Silver/Gold.

You must also wear protective eyewear for all other types of solar observation, e.g., during a partial solar eclipse, an annular solar eclipse, or a quick daily check of the sun (in search of large sunspots). Even when 99% of the sun is covered by the moon, the remaining photospheric crescent is still dazzlingly bright and can only be safely observed with suitable eye protection.

Never attempt to observe the sun with the naked eye, with regular sunglasses, or with unsuitable filters! Any negligence in choosing the right sun protection can lead to permanent eye damage or blindness.

The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold Solar Viewer Goggles

The layout of the Solar Viewer itself is intended to provide insight into the various ways of observing the sun and the beauty of our nearest star. The center section of the Solar Viewer shows the view of the horizon during a total solar eclipse, where the sun appears surrounded by a dark, slightly cloudy sky, while the entire horizon is still illuminated by the peripheral light of the sun's shadow cone.

The left temple (viewed from the front) shows a huge sunspot in white light, just like you would see on the sun with glasses. Next to it is an enormous solar prominence in red light of the H-alpha wavelength. To the left of it is a tiny Earth, providing a realistic representation of the scale compared to the sunspot on the far right. At the end of the temple, you can see the sun against a starry sky taken during the transit of Venus on June 6, 2012, showing how small the planet Venus appears against the sun.

The right bracket shows the real image of Earth with the umbra of a solar eclipse, with the eclipsed Sun above it against a background of stars to demonstrate the origin of the phenomenon. The end of the bracket shows a huge shedding of matter moving from the Sun toward Earth, recorded in red light of the H-alpha wavelength.
