Products description

Baader AstroSolar® ECO-size Safety Film 5.0, 140x155mm solar filter / solar film

  • AstroSolar® ECO-size Safety Film 5.0. Solar filter film for solar observation and solar photography at high magnification.
Size: approx. 140 x 155 mm, includes assembly instructions and cutting template – Telescope quality – Optical density (OD) = 5.0
Suitable for visual solar observation (only with additional optics) and solar photography.
This film is interferometrically tested to 94-96% definition brightness – making it as good as an APQ lens from Carl Zeiss.
On the market for over 25 years, this is the only film that does not degrade the optical wavefront and allows use at high magnification without loss of sharpness or contrast.
This is the same film as our proven AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 in A4 format, now available in a smaller, more affordable format by popular demand, as a solar filter for small telescopes, finderscopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, and camera lenses.

Baader AstroSolar® Safety Solar Filter Film – OD 5.0
For visual observation - with additional optics

All Baader AstroSolar® solar filter films are interferometrically tested to 94-96% definition brightness – making them as good as the best astronomical optics, e.g., an APQ lens from Carl Zeiss (Pleiger test report can be found online at Baader Planetarium). Unfortunately, we ourselves find it difficult to detect any difference in quality compared to our much more expensive flat lenses. This is only possible at very high magnifications above 250x. For higher magnifications, we recommend our Baader Cool-Ceramic Safety Herschel Prism. Our film is demonstrably sharper than all competing products known to us, especially including US glass filters.

What's particularly important is that our film shows the sun in its natural color – neutral white! Other films only show a blurred, bluish, or orange image of the sun.

The AstroSolar® Safety Film is made from a special, streak- and bubble-free film and, with a thickness of only 0.010 mm, achieves the optical quality of plane-parallel glass filters. The carrier material is not "Mylar"! This film was originally developed for nuclear and elementary particle research laboratories.

Unlike glass filters, AstroSolar® is almost completely free of pinholes (holes in the reflective layer) because it is coated on both sides. The coating is subject to constant quality control. The filter's effectiveness and its safety for solar observation are regularly measured. The quality of the solar image and the safety for the eyes are incomparably better than with the use of so-called rescue films or similar aids that require multiple layers.

The development of the AstroSolar® film was only possible due to the tremendous demand during the 1999 solar eclipse. Dozens of kilometers of film were destroyed during tests to develop the manufacturing process for a film with completely uniform molecular structure on our behalf.

Notes and specifications for the Baader AstroSolar Safety Film OD = 5.0

The patented Baader AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 is designed for visual and photographic observation of the sun at high magnification (with additional optics) – for use with telescopes and binoculars, as well as with camera and telephoto lenses.

With AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 – mounted in front of your lens – you can photograph the sun while safely using the camera viewfinder – or look directly at the sun through a telescope or binoculars at any magnification.

The coating of AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 is subject to continuous quality control. Its filtering effect and its safety for solar observation are regularly measured.

With AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0, with a neutral density of 5.0, the intensity of sunlight is reduced by 99.999% to less than 1:100,000. The double-sided coating of AstroSolar Safety Film 5.0 ensures excellent uniformity of the filter effect and neutralizes those occasional microscopic holes in the coating that are unavoidable even with expensive glass filters coated only on one side.

A single layer of this film is sufficient to build a safe solar filter with the highest sharpness performance. We have been manufacturing this film for over 25 years.

Important note: The EN ISO 12312-2:2015 standard for eye safety when using solar goggles with the naked eye does not apply to lens filters used in long-distance optics. AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 must not be used for naked-eye observation without additional optics or for the manufacture of solar goggles. For direct solar observation without a telescope, binoculars, or camera, please inquire about our EN ISO 12312-2:2015-certified solar goggles with AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film.

Build your own solar filter for your camera, binocular, telephoto lens, or telescope

You can build a safe solar filter from Baader AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 in just a few steps – at an incredible price-performance ratio.

You will need Baader AstroSolar® Safety Film, two sheets of sturdy white cardboard, scissors, a compass, Kleenex tissues, double-sided tape, and glue.

Detailed assembly instructions are included with every AstroSolar Safety Film. You can also find the instructions and a wealth of other information on our website www.astrosolar.com

Wichtige Hinweise

Never look at the sun with the naked eye without a sufficient filter - danger!

The solar corona can only be safely observed with the naked eye during the few seconds and minutes of a total solar eclipse (when the moon completely covers the sun) (see photo below). The entire, hours-long spectacle – as the moon moves in front of and away from the sun – may only be viewed with safe eye protection – the Baader AstroSolar® Safety Film 5.0 (in combination with additional optics). For solar observation with the naked eye, please use our certified AstroSolar® Silver/Gold Solar Viewers.

You must also use safe protection for all other types of solar observation, e.g., during a partial solar eclipse, annular solar eclipse, or your daily quick check of the sun (in search of large sunspots). Even when the sun is 99% covered by the moon, the remaining photospheric crescent is still dazzlingly bright and can only be safely observed with appropriate eye protection.

Never attempt to observe the sun with the naked eye, with regular sunglasses, or with unsuitable filters! Any negligence in choosing the right sun protection can lead to permanent eye damage or blindness.
