SkyWatcher Skymax-102 OTA 102mm 1300mm Maksutov Cassegrain

Dear Karl,

the first evening I was able to test the scope was on the 9th of November 2013 and my target was the moon. At the time I did not have some adapters I needed so I did not use premium eyepieces or premium diagonal, so I used the 10mm and 25mm eyepieces and diagonal that came with the scope. At f13, premium eyepieces are not technically required and the eyepieces and diagonal performed very well.

The moon with the 25mm at 52x and with the 10mm at 130x yielded no surprises. Since the artificial startest you performed at 306x was flawless, I did not expect any problems. Then I decided to really push things. I screwed a Baader 2.25x barlow on the 10mm, yielding 292.5x magnification. There was NO image breakdown and contrast was still amazing!!!

I was enjoying the view so much that I decided to do something crazy. I added  a Meade 2x barlow, converting the eyepiece + 2 barlows to a 2.22mm eyepiece yielding a crazy 585x magnification. It was a unique and rare evening which permitted me to go to such a high magnification and I haven't had such an observing evening since then in terms of atmospheric steadiness and transparency.

As I was looking at the moon, I was not worried about dimming in the image, despite the small exit pupil. It took me 2 minutes to refocus as critical focus is very difficult at such high magnification, but at 585x, the view was STILL as contrasty as before. This is pushing the scope at 146x per inch of aperture and I never pushed a scope this way so hard Although now there was some dimming of the image obviously, due to the high illumination of the moon this did not matter so much.

Since then, I discovered the joys of binoviewing the moon which I do frequently now. Since I cannot observe deep sky objects when the moon is up, I maximise my observing time by treating the moon as a friend and not an enemy and studying it. I was outside a few nights ago for about 40 minutes observing the moon and the following evening with a friend for 3 hours (and Mars for just a bit - I am not excited about planetary views).

I have also added in the last couple of months a specific filter. I use the Baader Moon & Skyglow filter I bought from you and I was shocked at the improvement in the images I was seeing. The moon obtained a more neutral colour and there was a clear increase in contrast and detail. This filter also suppressed much of the little stray light which I mention below as a small downside to the design of the scope.

I enjoyed views at 65x, 120x and 165x of the moon and it is so relaxing for the eyes to use binoviewers. There is no fatigue as both eyes are open and since the moon puts out a lot of light, there is no discernible dimming of the image, but the signal comes now to both eyes, increasing contrast to a very high level. The views are incredibly crisp and clear and contrast is simply astounding. I also did a quick star test simply to enjoy the beautiful airy disk this scope gives me, both intra and extra focal. It shows truly a textbook image of the airy disk - such a beautiful sight.

I firmly believe that any amateur astronomer should have a 102mm Maksutov, a simple pair of binoviewers and a Moon & Skyglow filter to view the moon. No need for either expensive binoviewers or eyepieces as the telescope is very forgiving due to the long focal ratio. This telescope has turned me into a lunar observer. Yes, I am still sometimes annoyed that when the moon is up I cannot observe deep sky objects, but my Mak now gives me an alternative. Also, I just take everything out to my yard and observe in 5 minutes, so this is a nice luxury to have.

The only small downside this telescope has is off axis stray light which comes from the fact that the tube that guides the light from the corrector plate mirror to the the diagonal is not flocked in these scopes and could use some flocking paint to reduce off-axis stray light. At some point I will send you my Mak for this paint job! For the time being, my Moon & Skyglow filter corrects this almost completely, so no rush!

I want to thank you for picking a top quality instrument and fine tuning it to perform this way. I am very impressed with this little telescope and I am looking forward to many wonderful evenings home at my back yard or with friends, gazing at the moon.
