Replacing the circuit board on a SkyWatcher HEQ5 mount

Product Description
The circuit board can be replaced on the sturdy HEQ5 mount.

Problem:
The motor control on the SkyWatcher HEQ5 was no longer functioning correctly and was throwing up a random error message.
After we ruled out all other problems, such as gear failure, incorrect power supply, etc., we became more convinced that the circuit board was no longer functioning correctly.

Solution:
A new circuit board was quickly ordered and delivered. Then we got to work.
To access the heart of the motor control, carefully remove the cover plates and expose the gears on the side and the axle at the front of the mount.
The circuit board is screwed on the left next to the axle (gear facing backwards). The RA motor is loosened so that it can be moved and the screw on the circuit board can be removed.

Important:

To access the circuit board's mounting screws, use an extra-long screwdriver. To avoid damaging the circuit board with grease (which is always present) on your fingers, wear gloves or handle it with a cloth.

Tip:
Before removing the circuit board, take a photo of the connectors on the board so they can be plugged back into the correct position.

After replacing the circuit board, screw the new circuit board securely back in place and perform a brief functional test while it is still open.

Conclusion:
If you have already opened the gearbox, we always check and adjust the gears of the motor and worm gear, and re-grease if necessary.

A final functional test confirms the success of the undertaking. After that, everything is closed and screwed back together.
