Experience with SkyWatcher Evostar-120ED ED-APO,
Dear Mr. Kloß,
After the arrival of the telescope, contrary to the usual rule, didn't bring an immediate change in the weather, but rather the "fair weather catastrophe" that had been going on for days continued, I now had the opportunity to extensively test it out over three nights (and days) of sleep deprivation :).
First of all, a brief note: since 1980, I have looked through various optics, from 60mm tubes to 80-120mm achromats, 4" apostrophes, 6-10" Newtonians, and various Maks, without being able to derive any expertise from them other than my personal experience, which can be somewhat categorized by the occasional half-knowledge I've picked up—thus, I'm just a dilettante layman.
When observing the sun (white light and H-alpha, stopped down to f/9), the difference compared to the 80mm achromat I had previously used was not only clear in resolution, as was naturally to be expected, but also in significant contrast and sharpness performance. Very nice.
At night (if you can even call it dark at the moment, but it's fine from midnight onwards), I first used Polaris extensively for a small star test. Then I did a tour de force of double stars I knew as test objects.
Result?
I'm really impressed. A doublet with this imaging performance in terms of color correction, sharpness, and contrast is a great piece of optics. For my areas of interest under the Rhine-Neckar sky, this is very close to the proverbial jack of all trades.
I don't know if and how much time they had to invest in the optics/mechanics/focuser themselves - if so, they certainly did a great job.
So: feedback - I thank you very much. This telescope will probably stay with me until the end :) (especially since it's completely easy to handle given its size and weight).
Best wishes for the weekend
TKS
