Successfully update or upgrade Meade Autostar handbox

If you're having problems controlling a Meade telescope mount, you should first update the AutoStar hand control box firmware. There are a few things to keep in mind:

First, you need a suitable cable for connecting the controller to your PC or laptop, which is readily available. Please note that Meade offers three different RS-232 cables (see table).

An RS-232 to USB adapter is also required:

Secondly, you need a current version of the Meade AutoStar update software, which is available for free download from the Meade website.

Thirdly, the mount must be connected to a stable power supply (preferably a power pack or charged power tank). The internal batteries built into some mounts should not be used, as installing the new software takes approximately 20 minutes, and the power supply must not be interrupted during the update process.

Now, the hand control box must be put into update mode. This requires a key combination.
Before powering on, the "Enter" and "Scroll down" keys must be pressed simultaneously. When the mount is powered on, "Flash Load 3.0 ready" appears on the display. The controller is now ready to upload the latest firmware.

Next, connect the handheld controller to the USB port on the computer using the appropriate cable and the RS-232 adapter. The COM port of the USB port should be known! If you are unsure, check the Windows Device Manager.

After starting the Meade software, the appropriate port must be set under "Options" - "Set COM Port."
Now click on "Upgrade Autostar Software Now." A window will appear offering you the option to download the latest firmware from the internet. Click OK and the upgrade process will begin.
After approximately 15 to 20 minutes, the process will be complete, and the handheld controller will be ready for use again.
