On one refractor, the front lens was completely covered in dust due to the white felt strips in the lens cap.
Wet cleaning would be suboptimal here, so we opted for the dry cleaning option.
Tools required:
Giotto blower, or similar
Clean, new, fine brush (don't borrow one from the children's watercolor box!)
Please do not touch the bristles when handling the brush, as this would transfer skin oils to the brush and then to the optics.
Cleaning
Carefully remove the dust with the brush without applying pressure. Blowing (with the Giotto, please not with your mouth!) on the bristles creates a static charge, making it easier to remove the dust.
Use the blower to remove the dust.
Here is a complete shot of the setup: the flashlight makes the dirt much more visible.
