Askar 120APO - apochromatic refractor - 120 mm, f/7
The 120mm aperture provides an inherent advantage in light gathering performance, resolution, brightness and contrast, allowing the photographer to collect more light and image more detail and brighter objects. The opening area of the Askar 120APO has been increased by 36% compared to the 103APO.
The more light enters the astrograph, the higher the limit size, which goes up to 12.2.
The Askar 120APO features an air-gapped triplet APO lens that incorporates ED glass.
When designing a refractor, the correction of chromatic aberration can be effectively improved by increasing the number of lens elements and developing lens combinations. However, this also means higher production costs and a more complex design. The Askar APO series uses special optical designs and multiple lens elements to correct chromatic aberration, which naturally results in higher quality object details and color accuracy. ED glass, also known as low dispersion glass, is a type of optical glass specifically designed to reduce chromatic aberration.
Mechanical design
The Askar 120APO is light and compact with a total weight of 6.5 kg (including the pipe clamps). This makes it suitable for outdoor use.
Each Askar 120APO is equipped with a unique name ring for identification.
The retractable design of the dew cap and the enlarged locking screws allow for convenient use. The dew cap serves to protect the lens from external and internal light influences as well as to protect the lens itself.
The Askar 120APO has two viewfinder shoes, one on each side. Many users are concerned about the limited space for installing additional astronomy accessories. For this reason, Askar has installed special finder shoes on both sides of the focuser. This not only eliminates the need to disassemble the finder scope when changing the position of the finder, but also provides additional mounting positions for additional astronomical accessories.
The handle of the Askar 120APO has a special slot so that it can also serve as a base for mounting a finder scope. The handle itself has been extended by 60 mm, making it easier to attach the astrograph to the pipe clamps.
The total weight of the pipe clamps is only 780 g. The knurled screws make it easy to open and close the pipe clamps. At the same time, the bottom of the pipe clamps is raised and offers more space.
The Vixen standard dovetail bar is compatible with most equatorial mounts and bases on the market. It has been lengthened and provided with screw holes so that the plate is now 290 mm long, making it easier to balance on the mounts. With the slot on the handle, the distance between the pipe clamps can be adjusted as desired. In addition, a Losmandy dovetail bar is also available to purchase, which can be used with various equatorial mounts.
Useful optical options
There are (currently) two optional accessories for the Askar 120APO: a 1x flattener and a 0.8x reducer. Both have built-in filter threads that allow filters to be mounted directly. They are also equipped with M54/M48 adapters that are suitable for holding accessories.
The 1x flattener does not change the focal ratio of the telescope itself. When mounted on the Askar 120APO, it maintains an aperture ratio of f/7. The flattener corrects field curvature and coma, resulting in flatter field edges and finer star points.
With the 0.8x reducer, the aperture ratio of the Askar 120APO can be brought to f/5.6. It is a standard reducer that also offers the option of flattening the field of view. A shorter aperture ratio allows the OTA to have a wider field of view and shorter exposure times, making it suitable for capturing large areas of nebulae, star clusters and faint, fast-moving celestial objects.
When it comes to visual observation, the Askar 120APO attaches great importance to the quality of observation. It can be easily focused when 1.25" or 2" star diagonals or various eyepieces are attached. Due to the segmented lens barrel, binocular lenses can also be connected for visual observation.
High-quality focuser
The Askar 120APO is equipped with a rigid 3.3" rack and pinion focuser with reduction that is compatible with most motor focusers on the market. There is a high-precision scale on the 10 cm long focusing path. The entire focuser is CNC machined and has an internal anti-reflective coating that provides additional measures to eliminate stray light.
On the back of the focuser there is a large 360° precision rotator with accurate scales for convenient adjustment and storage of rotation angles, enabling precise rotation. It is also equipped with an enlarged locking screw for the rotator, which can be easily locked even under high loads.
The connection at the back of the telescope comes with a 1.25"/2" adapter.
The entire tube of Askar 120APO is manufactured by high-quality CNC machining and treated with anodizing and spray painting. The orange accents on the ivory white tube create a bright and eye-catching look that creates a stylish and elegant overall look.
